The Gulf Coast Athletic Club opened its October 7, 2025 meeting on a rare Tuesday evening in the Clubhouse at Craft Farms Golf Resort at 7:00pm. President George Autrey welcomed the crowd of 45 attendees and thanked all for the RSVPs. It’s important Craft Farms gets a good count so they can be properly prepared for us.
George reminded all gathered that our annual Fundraiser Golf Tournament would be on Friday, October 24th at Craft Farms. Details are on the GCAC website. We need players and sponsors. Members of the Maidens of Mischief were present to show support and detail the Silent Auction items, which will be available on Thursday, October 23rd at Happy Hour. This is their 3rd year of partnership with GCAC and let’s hope it continues! Bid High! Bid Happy!
Zach Estes gave an update on the Pick ‘Em Football Pool. Dale Sumpter aka Claudia was the week’s winner. Magicpicks, allegedly Matt Akin, is leading the season with a slim lead over several players. Can he hold off the hard-charging Mayor Means or several others within striking distance? Two more months will tell!
The Gulf Shores High School Report has been a disappointing year so far for Football. Tough loss to St. Paul’s, but a win at Spanish Fort will keep us in Area contention. Volleyball is rolling and has Senior Night tonight. Area play starts next week.. Cross Country has started. GO, DOLPHINS!!
Team Reports and Crying Towel Head Chief Dec McClelland handled the reports again this week. In a rare opportunity to deliver a double Crying Towel with two back-to-back losses, the All-Star panel (did your Editor hear that the Pope was involved?), the coveted Crying Towel was awarded to Tom Grabowski after his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions lost the first week to Oregon, then the last week to lowly UCLA. (Spoiler alert – make that 3). Tom was proud as he now has a set of the coveted linen.
President George gave a wonderful introduction of our Speaker, Adam Korzum, a native of Mobile, but for the past 12 year, has been Director of Sports Nutrition for the Green Bay Packers, which is not really about diet and exercise. A pizza chef in Mobile in the 90s, it proved valuable when the U.S. Ski Association needed someone to match food with performance.
At the University of Oregon in 2012, he created a standard for feeding players and he noted NCAA standards are very strict, although better now. 2014 saw Green Pay calling Adam to make their team better, which involves hydration, metabolic testing, physicals and other metrics to balance each and every player to potential. He manages 14 chefs for 23 team meals a week, including team travel events. Current budget is $3 million. In Q&A, he discussed steroids and performance enhancing drugs. Injuries result from incorrect muscle mass growth. He also said players need at least 2,000 calories in them before play.
A fascinating program for all who were there!! Thank you, George!!
The 50-50 was drawn and the $93 was awarded and the meeting adjourned at 8:20pm.
