The Gulf Coast Athletic Club opened its August 31, 2026 meeting in the Clubhouse at Craft Farms Golf Resort at 7:00pm. Standing in for President George Autrey, Taylor Means welcomed the crowd of 48 and explained that President For Life (not really) George is coaching his son’s football team on Mondays.
He said expectations are high and every team is tied for first right now. He named the GCAC Board, saying this year is a group effort, that FUN is our primary objective, and urged all to pay their dues. Our Club has contributed more than $300,000 to Gulf Shores Athletics and Scholar Athletes over the past 27 or so years. Guests and new and old returning members were introduced.
Our GCAC Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, October 23rd. We need teams and sponsors to continue those GSHS contributions!!
Zach Estes will again lead the Pick ‘Em Football Pool, noting a change from our old Office Football Pool to ESPN Fantasy. Again, it should be fun to see if anyone can knock off Defending Champion Picker, three-time winner, Cynthia Tunnell, and current Club Prolific Pigskin Prognosticator Trophy Holder Randy Harkins. Once again, all games will be competed against the point spread. Looks so easy!!
GSHS Athletic Director Coach Watts gave the Dolphin Report, Volleyball has started slowly, good, but young, with 4 Sophomores and 2 Juniors starting. Cross Country has 26 on the team, and Football is off to a 2-0 start. Great team spirit this year, but going against a tough Saraland team this Friday. Our own Kevin Corcoran, GSHS Board of Education Chair, invited all to tour the new High School any Tuesday at 11:00am. Meet at the North Entrance by the Flagpole. GO, DOLPHNS!!
The aforementioned Mr. Corcoran led the team reports after being summoned to do so while finishing his cheesecake. In true KC spirit, he had the crowd in laughter in about three words or so. Team reports and high expectations were on display from the team reps assembled and only time will tell.
Doctor Gaylon McCollough, our perennial All-Star, introduced another returning Speaker, Scott Myers, CEO and Director of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham. This Sanford grad and former Football Defensive Back has been in Sports Management for more than 35 years.
Scott says GCAC is so different than most sports clubs in Alabama, since they are dominated by UA and AU, but our club literally is nationwide! Noting his son is a Quarterback at Auburn, he says he’s very proud to represent Alabama Athletes, and we have the finest Sports Hall of Fame in the country, with 33,000 square feet of display space on three floors and more than 7,000 artifacts.
The HOF has had 417 inductees and those born in Alabama or those who have contributed significantly to the Alabama sports scene are eligible. Although the 14 member Board, selected by the Governor, leads the Selection process, actually 80 people statewide make the final picks. Any Alabama citizen may nominate anyone.
Scott is also Director of the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program, a scholarship program started 41 years ago by ASHOF and Dr. McCollough. This one-of-a-kind program awards two athletes per year, one based on scholarship and another based on overcoming a difficult situation. ASHOF partners with AHSAA to these selections.
The ASHOF, a quasi-State agency, has 60% of budget coming from the State. 26 sports are represented, including the only Black Athlete from Alabama to win a Gold Medal in Bobsled in the Winter Olympics.
The 50-50 was drawn and the $85 was awarded. The meeting adjourned at 8:18pm.
