Celebrating Sports Fellowship,
Spirit, and Community Pride
A Message from the GCAC President
Thank you for your interest in the Gulf Coast Athletic Club and our continued support of Gulf Shores High School Athletics. We have proudly been a part of the Gulf Shores community for over a decade now and certainly have enjoyed wonderful and entertaining speakers during those years while recognizing outstanding scholar athletes from Gulf Shores High School.
Our fellowship is open and we welcome any guest (ladies too) that would be interested in joining our GCAC club. As you can imagine, we have several club members that represent Auburn and the University of Alabama, but we certainly have members of several other great collegiate programs throughout our country. Our speakers, mostly football but not always, share with us their tales of success and triumph or how they have overcome obstacles and hardships to be where they are today. It's always entertaining and most certainly, you will get one good laugh before leaving.
We always meet on Monday nights at the Craft Farms Clubhouse during football season and again we welcome you to come join us!
GCAC President, Declan J McClelland

4-Year Starter for
The University of Alabama
Runner-up in the hit TV show
ROGER SHULTZ, a fun-loving Southerner with a big personality. Roger was a four-year starter at The University of Alabama where he was a two-time All-SEC center. As a freshman, Roger was named to the All-American and All-SEC Freshman teams. His senior year, he was named the Pat Trammel Award and the Dwight Stephenson Award Winner. He was also invited to play in the 1991 Senior Bowl. After his playing days, he was named to the Alabama All-Decade team for the ‘90s,as well as the 50-Year All Iron Bowl Team. Tide fans will remember the steady presence Roger brought to the middle of the offensive line. In 1992,he returned to serve as a graduate assistant for the National Championship Team.
Roger has had a full broadcast career, serving as color analyst with Troy State, Huntingdon College Basketball, the Birmingham Steeldogs (Arena Football) and stints with radio talks shows in Tuscaloosa, Montgomery and Columbus, GA. He most recently worked for Jacksonville State University as associate director of athletics for external affairs. He also hosts a nationally syndicated radio show Sunday afternoons in the fall,” In the Trenches” with Stan White.
Roger recently participated on the NBC hit reality show,” The Biggest Loser.” He teamed up with former Alabama Football teammate Trent Patterson in a mission to shed pounds, where they comprised the Grey Team, affectionately known as “The Alabama Slammers.” Initially weighing in at 363 lbs., Roger weighed 199 lbs. on the final weigh in, losing 164 lbs., more than any contestant in the show’s history, and 45.18 percent of his original weight. He finished second, losing by 4 lbs.

Motivational Speaking topics include:
•His Story, College Athlete to Reality Show star oHumorous telling of how he has gotten to where he is today •Health and Wellness oMenu for Life-steps to take to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle oBenefits of health screenings and early detection oSleep Apnea a silent killer •Attitude for Success oP.R.I.D.E
Roger Shultz, Runner up Biggest Loser Couples
From Spanish Fort, AL
He lost 164 lbs in 5 months!
In April 2008, Roger Shultz walked away from the Finale of NBC’s hit show Biggest Loser Couples a Winner. The prize money he won as the runner up was nice but what he really gained back was his health. “$250,000 prize money isn’t life changing what is life changing is having my health back”. Roger was diagnosed as Type II diabetic on his 37th birthday; he had struggled to keep his weight down after his All-American playing days at the University of Alabama. I basically kept eating like I was training to win the national championship but wasn’t exercising at all to burn the extra calories. My motto was Food, Fun and Football.
Roger was voted into the finale by winning America’s vote after setting the record for the most weight loss on Biggest Loser Campus in show history. He was the only contestant during his season to participate in every challenge.
Since the Biggest Loser Roger has been active in the State of Alabama to help fight obesity. He was named the Coach for Scale Back Alabama, a statewide initiative to get Alabama citizens healthy. He provided motivation along with is broad knowledge of exercise and nutrient. The results of the 10-week program were amazing as participants lost nearly 200,000 lbs.
Roger has also started a non-profit organization Pride on 3 Foundation to help fight childhood obesity. He held his first Fun Run Through Science on March 7, 2009 and raised over $7,500.00.
Roger has appeared on Jay Leno Show, Oprah, eXtra TV as well as being featured in Alabama Golf Digest, People.com, University of Alabama Alumni Magazine, inTouch Weekly, Today.com, Birmingham Post Herald, Mobile Press Register, and has co hosted NBC 13 Daytime Alabama, been a guest on NBC 12 Today in Alabama, NBC 15 Today, ABC 33/40 Talk of Alabama, CBS 42 Wake Up Alabama, Fox 6 Good Day Alabama and has co hosted a Healthy Cooking Show. Roger also fulfilled a lifelong dream to be color analyst for his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide when was a guest analyst for the Tulane game.
Roger still continues to host his nationally syndicated radio show “In the Trenches” during football season.
As a full time Motivational Speaker Roger now travels and spreads his “PRIDE” to sales organizations, business and groups nationwide.
We had a great meeting Monday Sept 12th as we welcomed sports radio host Max Howell. Max did a great job going over some of his thoughts surrounding the world of college football and of course our members grilled him with their questions.
It was great to hear team reports led by Crying Towel committee chairperson, Kevin Corcoran. I knew, yours truly, would be this years first recipient as my beloved golden domers had once again found a way to be overranked chumps coming out of the gate. Good luck to the Irish as they take on Ketzler's Kids, the Spartans of Meeeeechigan State this saturday.
Thanks again to Jim Walker for giving us all rundown and breakdown on our new and improved GCAC website. Great job and looks sharp!
Look forward to our next meeting with coach Doug Barfield and remember to RSVP!!!
Next Meeting: Monday, October 24th
Guest Speaker, Jackie Sherrill
Great meeting this past Monday night as we welcomed our special guest, former Auburn football coach, Doug Barfield. What A great speaker! Informative, funny and inspirational. We look forward to our next speaker, Roger Shultz, at our next meeting.
We look forward to our team reports, led by crying committee chairman, Kevin Corcoran. Unfortunately our Arkansas Razorback member, Ed Cluck, was not in house to accept his prized crying towel this week as his hog soooeys were indeed rolled by the 3rd ranked Crimson tide.
Remember, Iron Bowl Raffle tickets still available...only 34 sold...plenty of chances left!
